Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rejects Classification as 'Military Supportive of Ukraine'

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced that it rejects the categorization of Cambodia as ‘Military supportive of Ukraine’, as seen in an infographic shared by a foreign language Telegram channel.

The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, categorically dismissing the classification of the Kingdom of Cambodia under the category, ‘Military supportive of Ukraine’, as published in an infographic by the Telegram Channel ‘Demografiya upala’, breaking down the positions of countries around the world with regard to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Ministry Spokesperson reiterated that the decision to provide technical training in mine clearance to Ukrainian deminers in Cambodia, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was purely made on a humanitarian basis, as similarly demonstrated in its many Peacekeeping Missions in Africa and the Middle East under the auspices of the United Nations.

In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation urged the Telegram Channel ‘Demografiya upala’ to rectify the infographic on the account of the fact that its classification of Cambodia is inaccurate and could also prove to be detrimental to Cambodia’s status as a peace-loving country which strictly adheres to a foreign policy of neutrality as anchored in its Constitution.

Following the Ministry’s statement, the Telegram channel ‘Demografiya upala’ edited the post in question and added a message saying that the channel respects the position of Cambodia and had corrected the infographic.
